CONTEMPORARY ARTIST BRIGHTON LONDON

A graduate of Saint Martin’s in London, AJ Laas dismantles and evaluates the epidemic of despondency within society today. Living in constant fear of rejection or obsolescence, by man or machine, souls are forced to live inauthentically by investing vast amounts of their emotional selves for a proclamation that they neither subscribe to nor agree with.

Brought up in an environment that offered hope, promise, and humour to an artist, he observed the devolving promise of a talented writer. Laas later became aware this environment was offering somewhat of a performative aspect within the everyday that mirrored perfectly what was going on in our wider society. Teaching him that beneath every veneer stands an absurdist struggle under the weight of depersonalising agenda. To only then himself be coerced into the same antiquated systems his Father battled against.

Fascinated by gesture, both formally and philosophically, the work attempts to engage political discourse through metaphysical attrition and establish an aspect of autheticity in each scenario. Ultimately hoping to erode any notion of artifice through clarity of intention – the only real principal is that the work should have purpose outside of itself.

Previous themes have gathered around an intersection between politics and the metaphysical, maintaining the hypothesis that global systems have a coherent voice that denotes you trust without question. In a world dominated by capitalist hypocrisy life can appear as a moment of merchandising in a way. …human beings can be considered a ‘moment’ in this process of reification. (Bourriaud, 2017)
